It’s been a while that I’ve been to Rotovegas, but since I had the opportunity to go and have a look, why not? When the smell hit me — sulphur, yay! — I realized, why I normally don’t go there. It is a nice town, don’t get me wrong, but the smell can get to you after a while. I still don’t know how people can stand it all their life. Having laundry drying outside is just unthinkable. It’ll just have the distinct Rotovegas smell. You wonder whether the expression “Smell ya later!” was used there for the first time. Who knows. Well, my nose does, but anyhow…
One thing, that’s awesome about RV, is the ubiquitous thermal power. If you’re staying in a hotel, this translates to the hot mineral pool right in your own suite. Yay for that! Nothing beats the soothing and relaxing qualities of a nice spa session after a long day. OK, there is one thing: a nice spa session with someone special! 😉
It was also the first time, that I managed to check out the Rotorua Museum, located in the former bath house. Unusual for New Zealand, this museum not only encourages donations (normally done with a grumpy lady at the till and a huge bouncer), but actually charges you $12. But that doesn’t matter, it’s money well spent – at least in my opinion. They offered quite a few exhibitions: about the bath house Taking the Cure (after the initial opening, they had to close after two weeks again – the lead paint had reacted with the sulphur and turned the walls black!), the Tarawera one (when a nearby volcano erupted), Tickle my senses and Sounds amazing. The Maori battalion wasn’t that exciting for me, but I think I’m rather saturated with WWII related exhibitions…
One last thing: don’t miss out on the movie. Good fun! 🙂
