…and I only found out today! Even if people might not have heard of Joseph Weizenbaum, they may have heard of ELIZA. ELIZA was a fairly simple computer program that pretended to listen to what people said, like a therapist would do. While conversing with ELIZA, people quite often asked Weizenbaum to leave the room, since they were talking about private stuff! Shocked by this, he started thinking philosophically about the whole AI stuff and became more and more a computer critic. Far too many people only too readily believe the result their computer returns them, without thinking critically and asking themselves whether that can possibly be the correct answer.
Nobody likes being criticized, but without critics, we would never stop and start thinking things over.
